Since 2007, thanks to a generous gift from Robert W. and Louisa C. Duemling, Washington College students have participated in the prestigious Presidential Fellows Program at the Washington, D.C.-based Center for the Study of the Presidency. An annual institute open to one student from each of 85 leading American colleges and universities, the program offers an up-close and personal view of the American presidency second only to a job in the White House.

The Presidential Fellows Program is a non-resident, part-time, year-long opportunity to study the U.S. Presidency, the public policymaking process, and the Chief Executive's relations with Congress, allies, the media, and the American public. Fellows come to Washington, D.C., on several occasions during the year for personal briefings by policymakers, journalists, and leading scholars, for networking opportunities, and for a chance to learn firsthand about the policymaking process.

The Fellowship requires that each student research, write, and present an original paper on an aspect of the modern Presidency. The Center provides Mentors drawn from the public policy community and government to help the fellows define their proposals, and guide them in the writing and editing of a paper that is brought to publishing standards during the academic year. The year’s best papers are published in an annual anthology of student work, A Dialogue on Presidential Challenges and Leadership.

Click here for more information on the Presidential Fellows Program, including examples of student papers. A list of participating colleges and universities can be found here.

The Center for the Study of the Presidency Fellowship is open to all members of the current sophomore and junior classes (you will need to be a WC junior or senior during your fellowship year). Students from any academic major are encouraged to apply. One recipient will be selected each year by a faculty committee representing several academic departments.

Applications for the 2009-10 academic year are due to the Starr Center’s mailbox in William Smith Hall by February 27, 2009.
