Chestertown, Maryland was founded in 1706, and for much of early American history occupied an important crossroads as the geographical center of the American colonies, a bustling port on the upper Chesapeake, and a stop for travelers between the northern and southern colonies. George Washington is known to have stopped here at least eight times, and helped to found Washington College in 1782. Today it retains its eighteenth-century charm, thanks to successful preservation efforts and a pervasive love of history that unites the community.
